The Japanese program at the Asia Institute is one of the largest Japanese programs in Australia. The language subjects are taught at a range of levels from beginner to advanced. They are designed to maximize acquisition of the language and develop communication skills in various types of texts, interactional contexts and aspects of the construction of meaning. The curriculum also allows students to develop a broad understanding of cultural, social and historical aspects of Japan. Japanese Studies subjects help students understand the complexity and diversity of the society, and challenge stereotypes. Teaching staff create a meeting place where students from a variety of cultural backgrounds can explore language activities to promote intercultural as well as communicative expertise.

アジアインスティチュートの日本語のプログラムは、オーストラリアでも有数の規模である。言語科目は初級から上級までのレベルで教えられており、言語と、やりとりや意味構造のような様々な文脈におけるコミュニケーション能力を最大限にするようにデザインされている。同様に、カリキュラムは学生たちが日本の文化的、社会的、そして歴史的な側面に対する広い理解を身に付けることができるようなものである。日本研究は、学生たちが社会の複雑性と多様性を理解すること、そしてステレオタイプを疑うことへの手助けとなる。教員は、多様な文化的背景を持つ学生たちが異文化間のコミュニカティブな専門的知識を得ていくために、言語による活動を詳しく研究していけるような出会いの場を作り上げている。
日本語・日本研究プログラム
教員数:専任教員8名、非常勤講師13名
学生数:約1,000名(学生は留学生や中国系の学生も多く、多様なバックグラウンドを持っている。)
日本語学習の主たる目的
"Students who complete this major will:
Gain effective oral and written communication skills in Japanese, and an in-depth knowledge of Japanese language, culture and society, relative to their entry level,and develop a capacity to combine knowledge of the Japanese language with one or more disciplines through critical research inquiry.
Gain knowledge of the social and cultural diversity of Japan and develop the skills to work with people from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
Gain the ability to set goals and manage time and priorities and work effectively both independently and in groups.
この専攻を修了する学生の目標
日本語における話す、書くコミュニケーション能力を身に付けること。学生の入門レベルと関連する、日本語、日本文化、日本社会に対する深い知識を得ること。批判的調査を通して、日本語の知識と一つ、あるいはそれ以上の学問分野を結びつけるような能力を伸ばしていくこと。
日本の社会と文化の多様性についての知識を得ること、そして多様な言語的・文化的なバックグラウンドを持つ人々とともに働くスキルを育てること。
自主的に、そしてグループで目標を設定し、時間や優先順位をやりくりして効果的に働く能力を身に付けること。

必修科目
日本語の授業はレベル1~8に分かれる。オンラインでチェックする。7以上では次のような科目を履修することができる。
Japanese Grammar in Action、Variation in Japanese Language、Japanese through the Media、reading Japanese Literature,Contemporary Japan,Japanese through the Media,Japanese Through Translation,Japanese Through the Media, Social Problems in Japan
日本人教員情報
6名、専門:国際関係、言語学、日本語教育、社会言語学、ジェンダーなど。
目標とする日本語のレベル
N3~N日本語能力検定N3~N2の取得を目指す。
必須科目の使用テキスト
レベル1~4『げんき』,レベル5~6は自作教材、にほんご中級301
卒業生の進路
専攻で75%以上の成績を取ると、文学部優秀学士(B.A. of Arts with Honors)として、論文(15,000語)を執筆することができる。論文の成績がよければ、その後、Ph.Dコースに進むケースが多い。(つまり、B.A.3年+論文→Ph.Dコース進学)
卒業生には、日本で就職する学生もいる。
学習上の困難点
初級の学生の中には中国系が多いので、学生間で差が出る。日本語を専攻する学生と、日本語に興味がある他の専攻の学生が同じクラスにいるため、モチベーションにバラつきがある。また、

キャリアアップのためというより、日本の文化に興味を持って留学する学生が多い。奨学金もあり。
留学後の学生の状況
留学しない学生とそれほど変わらない。メルボルンは現在就職難で、学部卒業後常勤の職を得るには平均で4年程度かかるとのこと。日本の仲介業者(マイナビ、ディスコ)によって、日本で就職する学生もいる(電通、楽天、など)。
